if i get a new amd CPU will i need to re install windows 10?

Solution
Not if you don't change your motherboard. And even then if you have the Windows 10 Anniversary update and use your Microsoft account it will tie the license to the Microsoft Account so you can change any hardware you want.

"a few years old" does not necessarily mean it needs to be changed.

I asked, because changing to a 'new' AMD CPU over what you have right now may not bring much of a performance benefit.

This is the wrong time to be spending new money on the AMD CPU line.

Well...we don't know what he is changing from or to.
$XXX for a new AMD CPU that gains a minimal difference...is it worth it? Not for me.

Either wait for Zen, or switch to Intel.
Either way, it is more than just a CPU change.

What motherboard do you have? The A6-6400K is an FM2 socket and scored 2281 on Passmark.com. If your board can only take FM2 then your best processor seems to be the A10-6800K which scored 4898 on Passmark. That is a reasonable jump for the $100 to $150 that processor seems to be going for.

If your board supports other sockets like FM2+ then you might be able to get into something higher performing so let us know.
