Am I wasting my time with a GPU Upgrade?

I guess really I'm asking if I went too big or not. Anyway. I have a couple year old XPS 8300. I was happy with the stock GPU though it was weaker than the processor and RAM so it held my gaming back a bit it still worked well. The old GPU was an AMD Radeon HD 6670 which was nice. After looking at my MB specs I got a new Radeon R7 370. Basically aiming to get something that put out a faster processor and more onboard memory. It should work according to everything I read.

Initially I did screw up thinking I had a 500W power supply but really it was a 460W power supply so I upgraded to a 600W power supply that had all the right stuff for it's connections. And assumed it would work. But it didn't. It's powering the PC OK but when the GPU is connected it will not post. It starts and the fans for the CPU, case, and GPU come on, the light for my GPU goes green, my internal MB light is on. All things indicate it should be working but it doesn't. All that happens is my monitor says it is going to sleep.

Things I haven't done yet that I'm going to try but I'm not sure if they're worth it. Hooking up the monitor via DVI. Currently it's by HDMI and I'm wondering if that could be an issue but it never was in the past for me. Second is removing and reseating the GPU again. I'm avoiding this initially simply because I don't want to do it too often and I've done it, and it didn't work, but that was pre-new power supply.

Anything I'm missing? Is there a back way of diong this? I'm just going off what I know from doing this in the past and I'm not sure if there are other options than the classic install?

Thanks for hearing my issue.

look things over on your model at the dell forum ? seems like xps struggles with newer AMD cards ??? I don't think the 8300 got a new bios updates as the 8700 has for support of newer cards ?? [with the release of the gtx 900 series of cards dell had to release a new bios ''A-10 '' to support them or they did not work ]

good luck

[for example ?? ]

'' Have you succeed to install GTX 960 on XPS 8300? I've tried to install R7 370 but XPS 8300 doesn't recognize it. So I'd like to try with Gigabyte GTX 960 G1 Gaming 2GB. Would you let me know?''

then

''wow, so glad I found this thread. just bough me a R7 370 4gb card and couldn't understand why it didn't work. wanting to see if it was the card, i tried putting it...

I was considering a 8900, but don't want to mess with it if this or other cards will not work in it.''

just dang sure look over dell forums on all that and your model

my disclaimer

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

also these boards do not have to meet atx standards and there pci-e slot power may not do the required 75w needed for most higher end cards and can be limited to say 45 or 60w that is all thats needed with the low end factory oem cards that it may of shipped with

you see how the dell guy answered here ?

that maybe all dell will back up as compatible as far as there concerned ??

I'm half tempted to just pop a new MB on there that's compatible with my processor. The processor for this PC kicks ass. I didn't buy it but inherited it. I adore the speed on this thing especially with the SSD I upgraded to. It isn't worth it to get a new PC because it's so much money but if a new MB would solve this issue it wouldn't be too much more by my quick research to get one that works with my processor and GPU. So it may just be worth it.

cant say just looks like NVidia cards are having the better luck theres several threads on that over at dell no need for a new board just see whats reported to work well over at the dell forums maybe a nice gtx 960 maybe the ticket ?

like I say anything you do outside of what dell offers on there systems from the factory is all at your own risk.

only thing dell guarantees is there computers work as is as sold to you from there factory with there parts they put on them new out of its box .. not a drop more

Yeah, I found a micro atx MB that has the same chipset and socket as the dell, if I have to get a new case and whatnot I will because the processor is the thing I care about most and the GPU is second. Seems like I'm struggling finding a 2GB card people say works that isn't PCI Express 3.0 which my MB certainly doesn't have. If I lose some of the perks of my dell case now like my 4 extra USB ports and SD reader I'll live. That being said the board I'm looking at seems to be an almost clone of the dell board but it's made by asus and according to PC part picker it's compatible with my gpu
