serious performance problems when crossfiring two different r9 390 cards

just bought a new GPU (MSI r9 390x) to use in crossfire with my xfx r9 390 DD. Both cards work fine on their own but when setup in crossfire together performance really starts to drop. the pc just feels really sluggish. Opening games and sometimes other programs too causes the pc will lagg for up to a few minutes at a time. my motherboard is an asus 970 pro gaming aura which supports crossfire. Kinda stumped right now so any help or advice to solve the problem would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
