I purchased a brand new plug and play USB DVD writer, plugged it in, tried to burn with DVD Architect Pro and it failed. Tried again with Nero and it failed. Sent it back.

Bought another brand new plug and play DVD writer, plugged it in, tried to burn, failed everytime.

How do I even go about troubleshooting this issue? Many thanks!

Windows 10 PC
USB DVD writers were plugged in at the back, not the front
Verbatim discs

i'm not sure. the link you provided mentioned the burner works with a macbook but i doubt a usb drive would only work with macs. i would suggest if you can get an internal SATA DVD burner you can try that but an external USB burner should work with at least one of the programs you have tried

Sorry! External writers plugged in via USB at the back of my desktop.

it is possible then your USB ports may not be able to supply enough power for the drive to work right. if they exist, try finding one that is powered externally.

I have a XFX XTR 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX power supply and an Asus X-99 PRO mobo. Shouldn't be a problem surely?

it could also be that you have too many USB devices connected

Power: XFX XTR 750W 80+
Mobo: Asus X99 Pro

Just tried again, different disc, everything unplugged: Failed on DVD Architect, then tried on Nero and it crashed majorly

DVD Architect says IOCTL error "interface or drive may be configured incorrectly". Nero just completely crashes sometimes, other times says failed to write.

Just tried the DVD writer on a friend's MacBook Air and it worked first time no problem. So something definitely wrong with my PC.

You could check Device Manager to see if there are any USB errors/ check Properties, Events tab etc. (Right click windows start button > device manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers).

Also make sure the drive itself is showing up in Device Manager, under DVD/CD-ROM drives
