Can i use lga 1156 Xeon on any lga 1156 motherboard?

Ok so i have this spare pc collecting dust and i decided to pimp it up a bit and use at in the living room. The main point of this is that i want a new cpu on it. The particular ones I was looking for were xeons that work on lga 1156 x3400 series. The problem is they aren't mentioned as supported in cpu support list for this motherboard, but I haven't seen a single motherboard which lists them and I'm sure that half of those should work since these xeons are rebranded i7-870s. Sorry for long post, hope someone can help.

What brand is your lga1156 MB?
1) If it is the OEM PC, the xeon may not work with that MB, because it don't list the xeon in the cpu support list so that they will not provide the BIOS for the xeon.
2) If it is other retail brand, you may check the your cpu and MB BIOS released dates, like X3450, which launched Q3 2009, if your MB does not have the BIOS around that time, the xeon may not work with the MB. If the MB had the BIOS on 2010, the xeon will work but again the MB may recognize the xeon as other quad-core cpu.

They aren't officially supported but there is no reason it shouldn't work. On the other hand, you will be losing a lot of features from the xeon by using it with a non xeon board. Why not go with an 870?

Thank you for helping. The reason that i want a xeon is because it's i5 price with i7 performance.

So did this xeon x3470 work for you? I am trying to do the same as you.. I have a gateway dx4831-05 using Intel i5 650 lga 1156 motherboard try to see if it will work for gaming.. Same thing you said.. I want a x for the i5 price with i7 preformance.. I hope it works
