For how long you plan to use your gpu? If you plan for 2 years go with gtx 1060, its better performing gpu at the moment. If you plan to use it more than 2 years when probably dx12 will become mainstream, I would say rx480.

If it were me personally, I would go with the GTX 1060 6gb. Nvidia typically has the more stable drivers and their cards run cooler. Although AMD is touting DX12 support, not many games are actually set up for it. So if you are going to be gaming at 900p or 1080p, I would purchase the 1060.

i was planning on having it for at least 3 probably 4 years as i dont mind having to turn down setting to medium to achieve around 60 fps and if im gonna have it for 4 years should i get the 4 or 8 gig version of the rx 480 also could you suggsest a good 3rd party manufacturer to get it from (eg gigabyte xfx(

Dont get Gigabyte one, there are a lot of reviews showing the card getting high temps.
See the Sapphire, MSI or XFX one. Get the cheaper one or the one you like most or the one with the highest clock speeds (if you wont OC it later).

I think this gpu can use more than 4 gb of vram and sustain 60fps in some games. It surely wont use all the 8 gb. I would buy the 8 gb version.

Forgot to say, if you're planning to use VR headset go with nvidia.
