I'm pretty sure 750W is enough for a single gtx 1080 and a i7 6700K with 16gigs of ram. But is the Corsair CX750M a good choice?

Solution

Actually the new series CX750M is a very good bronze rated PSU.

In his case however I would argue 750w is tremendously excessive. 550w is more than enough even to overclock. The CX550M would be a good budget choice, however preferable would be an EVGA 550 G2 or GS, or the Seasonic G Series 550w.

He wrote "Corsair CX750M" which if you go to almost any computer store today will get you the newest model, most places sold out of the older ones a while ago, except maybe in some smaller countries. Telling him its a bad PSU right off the bat is completely incorrect.

The original CX750M was never really bad in the first place, seeing as the new CX750M only had a single component change and still receives generally positive reception. Dislike for the original CX750M had to do with hysteria over the unit shutting down from OTP in Jonnyguru testing, which wouldn't happen to anybody unless their PSU was sucking in a lot of hot air from GPUs (most cases have the PSU facing down today) and the hardware actually consumed around 700W.

That is the CS750M not the CX750M. Totally different unit made by a different manufacturer.
