I want to format a CD disk on my old laptop to get pictures and files from it. What is the easiest way to do so and what are some other options?

Solution
You can't format a CD drive. It doesn't work that way. CD-ROMs are one use only, so they need to have no format. You can only write them with a CD writer, and once. (unless it's a CD-RW)

What is your laptop model? Is your CD drive a CD writer? Is it written something on the drive door? If it's an old laptop, it may not have a CD writer at all, thus it is unable to write disks. You will need an external cd writer drive.

Most external CD/DVD drives should work if it's Win98SE.

The laptop has a CD drive in it but it won't allow me to format the CD. I formatted one on Windows 7, but it shows as no free space. I do have an external CD/DVD drive if I can find the software to use on it. Thanks for the help!

Two other options (none of them *that* easy):
1. If your laptop has a LAN port, connect it to your LAN via cable, and get data out that way.
2. Remove the HDD, put it into a external HDD/USB-case, and connect it to another computer.
