I have decided to put my ASUS Radeon R9 290 4GB DirectCU II OC on sale to see what I could get for it. Someone is offering about 150 EUR for it (I bought it a year ago for 290 EUR).

I am wondering if its worth selling it at that price in order to get an Asus GeForce GTX 1070 Strix Gaming OC (costs 520 EUR in Sweden).

For advice purposes I am playing BF1 - and will switch my monitor to 1440p. So the question is, if I consider that my AMD card makes better use of DirextX 12, would it really be worth paying the extra premium for the Asus GeForce GTX 1070 Strix Gaming OC considering that the latter is Nvidia and does not make as good as use of DirectX 12?

Would be interested to hear peoples thoughts on this.

The 1070 is far and away better than a 290. The 390 traded blows with the 970, nevermind its downclocked-power-hungry-older-brother. The 1070 trades blows with the Maxwell Titan X and 980Ti. DX12 will not make up for the difference between the two of them. The 1070 is by far the better card; however whether or not it is worth that price to you is entirely up to you. The 290 should still be playing BF1 at 60FPS+ at 1080p with no problem. If, however, you do want to move to QHD, you will want the 1070.

R9 290 might get better performance gains from DX12, but your frame rate will still be much higher with the 1070.
GTX 1070 will be vastly better at 2560x1440.

However at 1080P R9 290 is still sufficient so unless you see a great sale stick with R9 290 until its time to buy your 1440P monitor.

Another option is GTX 980Ti. Only slightly slower than GTX 1070 and very close if overclocked.
They are significantly cheaper than 1070 and will also be great at 2560x1440.

depending on what games do you play, you may add a second 290 and you will be at gtx 1080 level. Just 3 days ago i did add my second asus r9 290x oc and i m very happy with it (I play BF4, Crysis 3, Witcher 3, Shadow of mordor which all supports very well crossfire).

Thanks for the responses everyone. As some people have commented its up to me to decide whether paying the extra 370 EUR to upgrade to the card is worth it (accounting for the difference after I sell the old one for 150 EUR).
