Thinking of overcloking my msi gtx1080

I've recently purchased a 4k 28" Samsung monitor and I've seen a drastic decrease in fps compared to my old 1080p 24" monitor (200+fps => 63-70fps change). A friend of mine recommended that I overclock my GPU for more fps but I'm worried since I've never overclocked anything before. My GPU used to hover around 70 degrees back on my 1080p monitor at full load and now it hovers around 74 degrees on the new 4k monitor on games such as Overwatch. My PSU is EVGA 850W. Could you please tell me what the advantages and disadvantages of overclocking my GPU are? Will the GPU's temps go way up, etc... Thank you!

Hey there!
The decrease in FPS from 1080p to 4K is because there are 4 times as many pixels to render!
Back to the point - temperature is dependent on how much power your GPU is using, and this depends on the voltage it is being given.
Short answer - if you increase the voltage, you increase the temperature.
However, you can also overclock without increasing the voltage. Programs like MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision X work well for this, allowing you to move some sliders to increase speeds.
The sliders will add an offset to Core, Memory and Voltage separately. There are plenty of guides of using these programs to overclock, but I will mention this - the temperatures will only go way up if you increase the voltage by a reasonable...
your 4K monitor is 60Hz - that means that it can only display 60 FPS.
anything above that is not visible. the only advantage of higher FPS is a bit lower input lag, but that shouldn't be a concern for you.
bottom line - no point in overclocking. you get at most 10% performance increase which is basically 6-7FPS more in best case scenario.
You would be better setting in game resolution to 1440p

I was swapping between 3840x2160 resolution and 1080p in overwatch and I really couldn't see much of a difference , the only difference was my fps went down.

Do you think I've made a big mistake in investing in a 4k monitor ?

I can't call it a mistake as everyone with their preferences. some prefer higher refresh rates, some prefer the size, some prefer the pixel density.
It is still a great monitor for movies and work (web/documents/whatever not gaming) and 60Hz gaming is good, just not great for fast paced games like shooters.

I would suggest trying to keep the temperature below 80c for sure, preferably below 75c, and perhaps increasing the fan speed to help keep your card cool.
