Hello there,

I have an Asrock Z97 Extreme 6, unfortunately a watercooler mount went wrong and I buggered the top PCI-E Gen 3 x16 slot by scratching the detection lane track on the back of the board to the point where it has severed completely.

I bought a Samsung PM961 to go with my build. The board comes with an Ultra M.2 Socket allowing 32Gbit/s connectivity through PCI-E Gen 3, however, it limits the 2nd PCI-E Gen 3 x8 slot to x4 mode when connected.

firstly, am I an idiot for believing that PCI-E Gen 3 x4 isn't sufficient for a heavily OC'd 980ti?

secondly, if I bought a PCI-E riser card for the PM961, would it be backwards compatible with my Gen 2.0 x4 slot? As in, could I boot from this drive when it's in the riser in the gen 2 x4 slot? I realise that there would be a limitation in the speed I could achieve but it would surely beat the 10Gbit/s of the 2nd M.2 slot on this board that I'm currently using.

I want to prioritise graphics performance over storage speed, but I also don't want to be stuck with 10Gbit/s bandwidth for a drive that is so much faster.

If the answer to my question regarding the 980ti is a resounding yes then I will just use the Ultra M.2, "why?" you ask, haven't I tested it? I'm in a lecture atm and it's just occurred to me that I didn't break the Ultra M.2 slot when I severed the connection to the top PCI-E x16 slot XD

Thanks
