So I'm currently in the process of building the Ultimate Windows 98 Gaming Rig. Why am I doing this? The answer is simple, I have many retro PC games laying in my parent's office closet and I would like to replay them. I know I could just use VMWare, but seriously what is the fun in that? For the build I decided to go with a complete OEM system instead of a custom build. The PC I will be using is an old Dell Dimension L800CX from 2000. This unit comes with an Intel Celeron processor clocked at 800 MHz which should be fast enough for the games I want to play. I've upgraded the ram to 256 MBs of ram which is more than enough for Windows 98. Next, the graphics card I used is an ATI Radeon 7000 with 64 MBs of vram, again more than enough. The sound card I used is the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS which I've heard had great DOS compatibility. The hard drive I used is a generic 120 GB HDD I bought new on eBay. And lastly my OS of choice is Windows 98 Second Edition which is more reliable and stable that First Edition and will also allow me to use MSDOS for older games. So that is it. My ultimate goal for this build is to play late DOS games and early Windows games at very good settings and framerates. I also plan to use this PC to play games from around 1995 to 2001. So I would really like to hear from the community what you guys think about my build and what you think I should change.

I wouldn't go with 98.. personally.. But it looks like you've got your mind made up on that. And you seem to know what you want in respect to the hardware and to play the games you want, there's not much you could change.
I don't understand why you don't just use DoS Box or equivalent.

I personally hate emulation. It's just not the same. It's similar to how retro console gamers play on the real system instead of emulation. Plus I've already had all the parts on hand which made it easier for me.

Fair enough, well it seems your pretty much set for what you want... You should get a retro NES gamepad :)
