If you do not mind running the cable through your house across the floor, you can buy a long Cat 6a cable for less than $15 and connect your pc that way. It is what I do on my main machine.
What router do you have and how fast is your internet plan? If you already have a slow internet plan, a speedy wireless router will do you no good, in fact, trying to use Wi-Fi on a slow internet plan won't be an enjoyable experience at all.

When you use the extender on ethernet cable it is basically a wireless nic card you can connect ethernet to. If you were to run a fairly long cable and mount it closer to the router it would get a better signal. Putting it right next to your machine buys you nothing and if you leave the repeater function active it will actually degrade your signal.
Would this be pretty close to Ethernet? or would it still be the same as WiFi?

Much better than wifi in many ways but you can't think to compare it to ethernet. It might get 300m or maybe a little more. Ethernet can run 1g up and 1g down for a total of 2g. If you use cat6a cable and have the money to afford 10g interfaces you get 10g up and down.
It likely will make no difference if your goal in access to the internet. Few people have internet that is faster than 300m.
There are those rare houses it does not work in though because of issue with the electrical wire so be sure you buy from someplace you can return it.
