so before buying i was wondering if a TP-Link 5-Port Fast Ethernet Desktop Switch (TL-SF1005D) (on amazon) would work to plug it into the router then have 2 more going to my fathers pc and then into mine!
would a 100 ft ethernet work? would it be any slower?
THANKS!

Well a router would already have more ports so first, do you have a router or are you referring to the modem?

If you already have a router, than yes, plugging in a switch to the router would give more ports and allow both access to the internet, etc. Routers typically have 5-8 ports already on them.

If you have a modem and only have 1 available port on the device, then you actually need a router and not a switch as a router takes the internet and routes it to all the PC's.

Also, in today's day of age, most PC's are gigabit ethernet, so look for a gigabit compatible switch, not just 100mbs.

Yes to all. Get a gigabit switch, that way at least the connection between your father's pc and yours will be faster in case you need to transfer files or stream videos or whatever. Regarding the length, it's fine, you won't run into trouble unless you go over 70m (it's supposed to be 100m, but that's not real life).

Yes just use the lan ports. That's what they are for. Plug both PC's into those.
