Hey all,

So for 2 days now i have this problem where my PC shuts down and shows no BSOD. I can't start up the PC again unless i wait for a while or turn the PSU on and off again a couple of times. Then mostly it boots up again.

It mostly crashes anywhere from Windows startup or 5-10 minutes after. I'm never actually busy on the PC. So the load is reduced to a minimum.

It also seems that after the crash my PSU keeps running for around a minute before the fan stops. Not sure if that means anything at all.

I'm running an i7-4770k CPU.
Dual channel ram 8GB DD3.
1 SSD.
1 HDD.

What I've tried so far:
Different dual channel ram.
The GPU test. (using a paperclip on the green/black connector and see if it runs)
Running the PC with only SSD.
Running the PC with only a new HDD, PC crashes while installing Windows.
PC never seems to crash while i keep it running in BIOS.
I have reapplied new thermal paste.
I have tried a different GPU.
I have reset my CMOS.
While the PC is in Windows i've ran a program to check voltages/temperatures. I haven't seen anything strange. CPU/GPU C° were below 40.

A few parts out of the voltage/temp log:
Hardware monitor Nuvoton NCT6779
Voltage 2 3.41 Volts [0xD5] (AVCC)
Voltage 3 3.41 Volts [0xD5] (3VCC)
Voltage 7 0.08 Volts [0xA] (CPU VCORE)

Voltage 9 1.34 Volts [0x54] (DRAM)
Voltage 10 11.97 Volts [0x88] (+12V)
Voltage 11 5.04 Volts [0x7E] (+5V)
Temperature 0 22 degC (71 degF) [0x16] (SYSTIN)
Temperature 3 26 degC (78 degF) [0x1A] (TMPIN3)

Clock Speed 1 799.95 MHz (Core #1)
Clock Speed 2 3899.78 MHz (Core #2)

I'm assuming it's my motherboard at this point although i don't understand why my PC doesn't start up unless i wait for a while or play with the on/off button of the PSU...

Anyone has a clue what the problem is? Or what my next step should be? Can it still be the CPU?

I don't have an extra MOBO or PSU unfortunately.

Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: Could someone move this to Systems?

You could also check what kittle said, maybe it's just the fan that's not working and it gets hot, therefore it shuts down. If the fan is not spinning, then it could be something cheaper to replace rather than buying a whole new PSU. But at least you were able to narrow it down to a single part.

I doubt it's any of your other parts. I'd say it's 90% sure a PSU problem. It has happened to me before and what you describe wouldn't happen that way if it was another part. You'd probably get a BSOD first and not a full shutdown.

Hey, thanks for the quick respond.
Ok, I'll try a new PSU tomorrow. Might have to run it on mobo GPU though because of power limitations.

Something else i just remembered. Yesterday I wiped one of my SSD's and got a Windows install off without the system shutting down itself. When Windows was completing it wants to reboot the system and complete the installation right. The PC shut off, but never started up again. And my power led was on untill i held in the power switch for a couple of seconds.

definitely sounds like a PSU problem. something inside is overheating. so you have to wait for it to cool before things function again.

What PSU are you using? Whats the other PSU you will be trying?

It's a BEQUIET PSU 1000 WATTS i think.

I'll probably buy a Corsair 750 modular one now.

There was nothing wrong with the fan. It was the PSU. Replaced it today and everything is fine now.
