Asus Z170 Pro
16gb (8*2 DDR4)
i5 6600k

I'm at a loose end now with my BIOS. I recently had an issue with my BIOS where it wasn't keeping time, on the recommendation of changing the CMOS battery i did that and sure enough that fixed the time issue.

In doing so however it made my BIOS loading phenominally slow. It took about 10 seconds to get off the ASUS splash screen when it normally only took seconds.I decided since my BIOS hadn't been updated in 12 months, i downloaded the new BIOS update.

As soon as the update completed, i got black screened.I restarted but the black screen kept re-occuring. I reseated my CMOS battery firstly and cleared the CMOS pins. On restart the computer comes on then restarts 2-3 times automatically.

Now the Asus splashscreen won't respond to my keyboard command of pressing F2. I get the Megatrends page to press F1 to recover the BIOS, as soon as i do though i get black screened again. I tried for an hour now and had no success...

Seems like something has gone critically wrong?

First off, For future reference -- ONLY update your bios if it fixes a problem you are ACTUALLY having. The bios on my PC is 5yrs old and runs fine. Im sure Asus has pushed updates for my board, but im not having problems.

Now -- to fix your problem, I would give Asus support a phone call and see what they can recommend to restore your old bios, or to fix the one you currently have.
if you cant get in touch with their support, try to download the bios you originally had and re-do the flashing process

I know i've updated the BIOS previously without any issue, i had heard of the horror stories before hand but this is the first time i've encountered any type of issue relating to the BIOS.

I do know the version i had previously, the question would be if i can download it and put it on to a USB stick, how would i exactly to run the old version of the BIOS? I currently have no way of accessing any part of the BIOS other than the POST screen, if i press F1 to access the BIOS this is the point i get black screened.

Would there be a combination of key presses to action anything like that?

I was speaking to a friend in work about it, due to the lateness of this issue occurring last night i may have forgotten one or two possibly solutions.

I was told to perhaps try powering down the system, taking the CMOS battery out again, pressing the power button in for a few seconds and leaving the CMOS battery out for about 10-15 minutes to drain completely. This should technically work.

Failing that i'll try taking memory modules out one by one although i really don't think it's a memory fault. Hopefully the above will suffice and i can get at least some success in getting in to the BIOS.

I found a thread here at THW, which had my exact issues.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-3063890/asus-z170-pro-gaming-bios-update-failure.html

The resolution for them is they connected up a VGA cable to their monitor and suddenly it worked for them. But this doesn't seem to have worked for me.

I have a USB 2gb thumb drive formatted to FAT32, i downloaded the updated BIOS and renamed it Z17PG.CAP and that is the only file on the thumb drive.

I have put the Asus Chipset Support DVD into my DVD drive, and selected ALL of my USB and USB3 drives on back of motherboard, none of which are recognising the thumb drive.

This motherboard according to the manual does have the Asus Crashfree 3 BIOS.I've looked at Youtube videos on users enabling this, but i can't do it.

F2/DEL does not work, F8 does not work. Soon as i get the POST screen to F1, i press F1 and the screen goes black/blank

Well bit of a bump to this since it's been little over a week, i conceded defeat last Monday and took it to one of the local computer shops in the area who took their time with it because one of the technicians was absent, i only got a response this afternoon from it.

It seems they attempted to flash the BIOS and they had no success on it. Don't know how hard they tried overall but alas i'm picking it up come Monday. They said it's the motherboard that's gone but i just don't believe it since i'm getting POST.

I suspect a BIOS chip could be the only reasonable way of sorting this out, but in the UK it looks like no places stock the BIOS chip on this Asus motherboard and they can only be shipped in from mainland Europe.

This item was bought from eBay in September 2015, so essentially second hand, i have messaged the seller to see if he can perhaps send me a receipt or something so that i can get Asus to complete an RMA but i have had no reply yet and in fairness he is under no pressure to assist me.

The only thing would be is to concede defeat entirely and buy a new motherboard. With Black Friday hitting now i could be very much in luck getting a new motherboard, but my only concern is losing data on my Raid 0 since i foolishly didn't back up my hard drives before i attempted the BIOS flash.
