Intel Mobile Core i5 CPUs - Naming Scheme

Why does Intel not have a true quad-core i5 in a mobile version?

All mobile i5 CPUs are dual-cores with hyper-threading. Only difference in that and the i3 is turbo boost.

Reminds me of Nvidia naming their mobile GPUs the same but with half as many cores.

Simply adding a letter instead of naming it what it would reflect in the desktop world.

I've even seen mobile i7s from years ago that are dual-cores with hyper-threading. Why even call it an i7?

Just seems like an attempt to fool the buyer. If an i5 can have only 2 cores, then an i3 could have turbo boost.. just sayin. Better to get more than you expect rather than less.

Solution

Intel released mobile quad core i5 CPUs with the 6th generation Skylake Generation Core CPU series. They can be identified by the "HQ" designation such as the quad core i5-6300HQ used in the Dell Inspiron 15 i7559 gaming laptop and the Dell XPS 15 (9550 model) which were released back around November / October 2015.
There are various cores for the different series out there. The i5's chips depending on family are dual core or in same cases quadcore, sometimes they're multi threaded sometimes single threaded. The i7's are sometimes dual, sometimes quad depending on the series. The i7's will also have larger caches than their i5 counterparts. The i series doesn't just refer to the core count, thats just been an easy/lazy way of determining which part was which when its more complex than that.

Well it was just the other day I was reading a document directly from Intel on the differences between i3, i5, i7, and Xeon. It must have been only referencing desktop CPUs because the differences were as such according to Intel.

i3 - dual-core, hyper-threading
i5 - Quad-Core , turbo boost
i7 - Quad-Core(*or higher), hyper-threading, high clock speed, turbo boost
Xeon - Quad-Core(*or higher), hyper-threading, turbo boost

And even that isn't entirely correct. The Haswell-E series i7's also sport 6-core and 8-core variants and the Broadwell-E series have up to a 10-core. Branding can get confusing, which is why its always important to read up on what you're buying.
