Trying to Install Third Monitor, Graphic Error on Second Monitor

Hi everyone,

I'm facing some issues with my graphics card/screens. I tried to plug in a third screen and I fear that I accidentally screwed up my graphics card/cable/screen.

My graphics card is a Gigabyte Radeon R9 380 which has 1 Dual-link DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI, and DisplayPort.

I usually have two screens plugged in, using the HDMI port and the Dual-Link DVI-D port (this one using a HDMI-to-DVI adapter). I recently acquired a third screen and was planning to use it with a VGA cable using a VGA-to-DVI-I adapter.

So while the computer was on, I attempted to plug the third monitor with the VGA cable-to-DVI-I to my graphics card and suddenly all of my screens went out, black.

I restarted my computer, but to my dismay my second screen, the one with the HDMI-to-DVI adapter, has this graphics issue that I can't seem to solve. I tried restarting my computer, unplugging everything and plugging it back in, but nothing seems to be working.

Here is what my two screens look like. http://imgur.com/a/aJ0xu Sometimes the second screen also flickers to blackness and then comes back the same exact graphics error.

Is there something I can do to fix it? Did I mess up my graphics card? All I did was try to plug in a new connection into the other DVI port. Was I not supposed to do that?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Okay, I see. The two DVI outputs are closely connected, so if you break one, chances are you break the two.

The answer is yes, you broke your DVI ports...:(

And yeah, it should work if you use a Displayport to HDMI adapter. I highly doubt it has been affected. Short of replacing the card, it's the last thing to try to keep your twin monitor setup...:(

Hello.

Sadly, this looks like you sent a static shock inside your video card or monitor. Did you correctly ground yourself when you wired your VGA/DVI cable? If not, and if you plugged this while the PC on, chances are you blew your R9-380's or monitor's DVI port.

Does plugging the second monitor (the one with the glitch) by itself in the HDMI port work? If yes, then the issue lies with your video card. Try plugging the HDMI-DVI adapter in the second DVI connector? (The one not in use) If it's okay, then you just blew the single DVI...if not, you'll need another card. Or a displayport to HDMI adapter.

I just read that your other screen does this too....? Then I guess you blew the R9-380... :(

Sorry I think I communicated that wrong. The only screen having the issue is the one with the graphic issue (the one that was using the DVI-D port). The first screen--the one using the HDMI port--works just fine and has no errors.

I tried unplugging the first screen and plugging the second screen using the HDMI port. So it seems that the HDMI port on the graphics card works just fine because using the HDMI port on the other screen is fine, no errors.

However when I try plugging in the screen to any of the two DVI ports it has the error. So I guess I shorted out both DVI ports?

Do you think there's a chance that I can still use the DisplayPort on the graphics card to run my second monitor? I just want my second screen working again...I don't want a third screen now...haha. I thought I grounded myself but I guess I didn't do it properly enough.

Thank you for the information, I just ordered a Displayport to HDMI adapter and I'll update the thread with the results once I've tried it out. This time with the computer off and myself properly grounded.

Today I plugged in the second monitor using the Displayport and it works just fine!

Seems like I did indeed fry the two DVI ports but as far as I can tell I didn't blow my R9-380, for which I am very thankful.

Learned my lesson. Be careful and properly ground myself (or turn the power off) when plugging in things. I didn't do that when I plugged in my second monitor (I think I just got lucky there) but my luck ran out trying to plug in a third monitor. At least I still have my twin monitor setup.

Thank you very much for your help in troubleshooting this!
