specify the part number, the CPU memory controller will run at the slowest SPD speed (MHz) and timing (latency), for example a DDR3 1600 CL 10 pair with DDR3 1600 CL9 then you must set both of them at exact speed and timing such as 1600 CL 10 RAS 15 ..., there's a good chance if both of them will cause no problem if they are same chip model (samsung, hynix, micron) model (Micron D9LCK, Hynix H5TQ2G83BFR-H9C, etc).
should work if the numbers on both brand sticks match up most ram is made in the same factory just diffrent brands are named to diffrent companies as they are sold i mix my brands of ram as long as the timings numbers on the sticks match up

There are no guarantees when mixing packages of DRAM...it's a 50/50 crapshoot if they will play. Best to get full amount you want/need in a single package

open the heat spreader, take a look of the chip's brand, you should see the logo, Yes you can, Intel's CPU RAM controller will just automatically set for the slowest module because the slow one will not run faster unless you set it to and system only use single type of memory bandwidth signal .

check the motherboard RAM QVL and RAM motherboard QVL, recently I reply to http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3234891/configure-ram-run-2133-mhz.html#18856582 , strange things such as only recognize as single channel even he has dual rank kit and wouldn't run at desired speed.
