computer was left on all day and was extremely slow when I got on with 2 apps running. So i force shut down. Restarted laptop and it started a update...finished and the laptop started. Message came up saying the update didn't fully update and everything was taking forver to load to an eventual standstill so I had to force shutdown again. Then it started and would say preparing to repair...take 10 mins and then say configuring your computer...it did this for 5 hours so I shut down and started system recovery, now it's just sitting on a blue screen with the cursor.

Hi there Mikael_9,

I believe there could be something wrong with your drive. This is why, you can try to use some data recovery tool, in order to retrieve your data. You can give the Ubuntu Live CD approach a try: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode
You will need a flash drive or a CD, so you can boot from it and try to access the drive and the data stored on it.

Once you back up your data, you can try running some start up repair. You have an OS CD right?
If this doesn't help you will need to perform a clean OS installation.
