Hey guys,
I recently ordered the P910 ThinkStation, but I want to install a GTX 1080 in it instead of the built in graphics card.

Build is this:

https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t34.0-12/14996543_10154854465948690_841366559_n.png?oh=068460c8f0a5c868c9b367baa3b1c1dc&oe=5828BBC6

There are so many versions of the 1080 out there, which should I go with? What are the pros/cons? Cheapest option? Do I need anything else to make it work?

Note: I do a lot of video/photo editing, 3D animation, and game dev.

Thanks for any pointers!

I linked that from leveno's forum in a edit above ..

loks like how I read in to it its try at own risk as I said - they[leveno ] do not support it so if it burns something up or fails or what ever it all on you alone ..

and yes Quattro workstation cards are a different animal and can go back to the proprietary leveno bios used ... and why I said '' do be sure where you bought it from [vid cards] has a generous return / refund policy [you may need it ]

you see how he put it ?

''Two different issues. The P910 can easily support dual GTX 1070 cards from a power standpoint. ''

and why I posted back with

'' The P910 machine can also house up to three NVIDIA Quadro or NVIDIA Tesla graphics or compute cards to...
Forget about brands. The cheapest decently cooled card is the best. They perform just the same as all these overengineered cards that cost 100$ extra.

Usually Palit Gamerock / Gainward Phoenix / PNY 1080 / KFA² 1080 / Gigabyte G1 / Inno3d iChill are the cheapest decent cards.
Asus / Evga are also always good cards, but not really worth a premium price tag
The insider tips are the Inno3d iChill x4, Palit Gamerock and the Gainward Phoenix as those come with the best cooling solution.

Just see what you can find at the most attractive price.

size is probably going to be your biggest concern as is power needs. have you measured the space available for the card? does your psu have the right power leads for a 1080?

here is a list of the cards along with specs including sizes and power needs. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-3047729/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1000-series-megathread-faq-resources.html#17902598

do some measuring and then grab one that fits. any custom card is fine and won't see any performance difference over any other card. so avoid the top end super expensive ones as they are just not worth the price. cheap and good looking to you is the name of the game with Pascal cards.

@Math Geek I have not received it yet; I have another week to go. All the details I have are linked above. Is it safe to say I must wait till after I get it, and measure it, before I order the card?

i would wait just to be sure. pre-built machines are never any uniform size and there is no telling what room is inside and where. plus power supplies for pre-built machines are never really made to be upgraded. often the psu is enough for the system as is and not any room for expansion. you may find it is not sufficient for a 1080 which needs a minimum of an 8-pin connection but many models us a 6&8-pin or even 2 8-pins.

add in the workstation machine and it may work the power differently like in a server type set-up.

i'd wait to get the machine and open it up to see what you are dealing with before buying a card. the product page does not really get into enough info for me to even offer a half informed idea of what's inside it unfortunately.

well the "Platform Tower 1300W 92% " suggests ample psu power with appropriate connections. 1300w is enugh to power more tha one 1080 if it has the right connections. :)

but space available for the card is still unknown. i'm heading out for the evening and don't have the time to research the case itself. but if you have time you can try to google the case and see if you can find anyone who has added cards and what they fit in.

and its not like leveno likes you to do out side upgrades on there computers like any aftermarket vid cards - if any card works over a low pro low powered card I would be well surprised

as you can see here

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd011147

I dang sure do some solid homework before i spend good money on a nice card for it and find at best your looking at a black screen

there proprietary motherboards and proprietary bios's

last guy we found out the motherboards pci-e slot was limited to only 60w max so you know a real graphics card requires the full atx standard of 75w at the slot .. [proprietary motherboard]

then you got that proprietary bios that may only support leveno selected approved [OEM] cards [locked bios ] not just any and all aftermarket
ya, I sure as heck would not risk a 200- 400$$$ card on that if you do be sure where you bought it from has a generous return / refund policy [you may need it ]

good luck

i'll recant

'' The P910 machine can also house up to three NVIDIA Quadro or NVIDIA Tesla graphics or compute cards to handle professional graphics programs and simulation applications including three M6000s.''

so power limits aint there them are 240w cards so now you need to find out if the bios will accept consumer cards like a 1080 ??

Check out this... I did a little research, before buying it, to ensure the GTX was compatible. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkStation-Workstations/ThinkStation-P910-video-card/td-p/3430085

"We don't officially support GeForce in workstations. However, there shouldn't by any issues with installing a couple GTX 1070 cards in your P910 workstation as long as you don't mix GeForce with Quadro cards as the driver is different between the two."

So one should work fine. Right?

Does this ensure it's compatibility, or is there some other piece I'm overlooking?

pretty much he saying you try it at your own risk . if it works great . if not , OH'well .

tough call

the motherboards bios and the card used v-bios got to handshake to work and if leveno did not put that in there bios its not going to unless they update the boards bios to support a wider range of cards or models to be allowed
