HD Graphics 2500/4000

Intel updates the name every time a new generation of CPUs come out, it's just the graphics section of the die that Intel ships with all but Xeons and the Extreme series processor. For your example, 2500 is lower tier ivy bridge and 4000 is haswell. They get faster each generation

Thank you. Now I understand :)

While we are on the subject, could you recommend a high value, cheap, decent 2gb+ video card for my i3 Asrock Z77 Extreme4 mobo? It will be used as a media box on my TV for Kodi.

Thank you for your time.

John

Hey BiggyJ. I understand you want a graphics card with over 2GB of Vram, but may I ask why? If you're only using it for video streaming and media then why would you need a high end graphics card. Surely a high end CPU would be better?

Well... you may know more than I when it comes to this but I just thought that because it only has 4g of ram and uses the crappy Intel 2500, that a strong video card would be better.

Thing is I can (or have not yet) not figure out why I am having such a problem with this puter running Kodi. I have a 25meg down connection and using Ruko or my old Gen1 FireStick even, I have absolutely no problem.

I did a fresh install of Win 10 and can not even watch ONE program with Kodi without major issues. Either the channel will not load at all or the picture will be good but frozen with NO audio or totally choppy.

I'm bound and determined to figure this out.

I was even thinking about putting a copy of Win 7 on it to try that. Hell if I have to, I'll even try Linux.

Just not sure where to go from here so I thought I would try a better video card and a bit more memory. It's really getting under my skin, so to speak.

And your advice IS VERY welcome. Hell if someone wanted to I would even be happy to let someone TeamView in and have a look-see around.

Thank you for listening,
John

Peculiar. I now think this issue is not as much to do with your hardware but the software. A low end CPU should still be able to stream a simple movie. While you are right with the graphics card I think your current Intel HD should be more than capable. RAM is not a necessity although the more the merrier, right?

Perhaps you would want to TeamView with someone to get a quick checkup, I'd do it for you but I'm just a stranger on the internet so maybe you should hook up with a tech support company (and not an Indian one haha).

Thanks.

OK... so I just discovered that 98% of all channels in SD plays just fine. So 720 and up does not. So would that be CPU or my on board video and 4g of ram?

Thanks,
John

Well... like I said, this is a fresh install so there is not much damage you could do. I'd trust you but I am sure you have other things to do so thank you anyway.

Right, I'm so sorry for not asking this earlier but the title doesn't help with what onboard graphics card do you have, do you have HD 4000 or 2500?

In this case it is more than likely your graphics card. A low budget £100 card such as the GTX750ti should make easy work of the video decoding. Although one last question, is your MONITOR 720p or above?

I don't know. I can't find those settings in the Intel setup software. I can't even find where to change allocated shared memory in the Bios. Is there somewhere in Win 10 itself that would tell me?

Alright, you need to hit the Windows button, type settings and Windows Settings should pop up. From there select system. Once you have done that it will show you the display settings and underneath the orientation settings there should be text saying advanced. Select that. It should now show you your current resolution.

Please get back, thanks.

Nevermind, heard you found it, great!

In control panel> settings> display, it is set to 1920x1080 and says recommended. Also note, something I did not think about is that the streaming signal is feed to the TV through a Denon AV system. (HDMI) Don't know if that could have anything to do with it or not. And above the resolution in settings it says Display DENON - AVAMP

That system would at worst cause a little lag, not really noticeable because it's made for what you're doing. Anyways, it sounds as if your onboard GPU is having a little trouble decoding the image quality. As such a GTX750ti would be a great choice. If it doesn't work out refund it or use it (it's a nifty game player!).

Thanks again.

OK... one last question. This is a new amp and I have not really played around with it. Should there be any kind of settings in it that I should have a look-see at?

PS - Is that video card the best choice for the money?

Amps just give sound so it doesn't matter. One last thought in this streaming program is there an encoding/decoding option. If so just change it to H.264. And yes, for all round purpose it is a great gaming card and should suffice well enough for you.

I've heard of it but not really much of a watcher myself. Have you checked for a encoding/decoding feature by the way?
