I recently decided to get an ssd and didn't think to look for what type of sata ports my motherboard has. Now I know its backwards compatible but I imagine with sata 2 and especially sata 1 it will hold the ssd back some it will still certainly be better than a hdd though. But im thinking of upgrading to a 6700k and a z170 board in the next 2 or 3 months and if my motherboard is only sata 1 or sata 2 I might just wait to install it until then. This http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docLocale=en_US&docId=emr_na-c03924124bis the only info I can find on my motherboard since its a pre-built there is no manual. Is there any way or software to tell which type of sata ports I have?

Solution
H87 is all sata 3.

I meant as in the sata versions I,II,III. I just was wondering if there was any way of going about of determining which version you have.

Sorry about that.

You can open the case and check which motherboard you have and type it in google to find out. Or you could download CPU-Z to see which motherboard you have. Sometimes your motherboard model isn't available through Windows though. Visually checking it is the best route.

Going to the start menu and using the "System information" in the search also has your system information.

Thanks I'll try some of those. The link I gave above was from hp directly about my motherboard but unfortunately they dont go into detail about the sata port versions.

hmm odd. My computer is a hp envy 700-414. Their page shows my motherboard but none of it tells the sata port types. But thanks for the help anyhow.
