Safe to use 3amp plug power lead on Xbox one S?

The included power lead in the box for Xbox one S was only like 1-2meter long, so I purchased a longer 3meter two pin lead here in UK.

The new lead I saw says 3amp on the plug, however the old lead that came with the Xbox says 5amp.

Is it okay to use the new 3amp lead with the Xbox or do I risk frying something?

Hi

Internet Reports show the xbox one uses about 120 watts

The higher 1.8 amps probably applies in usa with 115 volts

Power supplies often require a higher power for a very short time at switch on

So 5 or 10 or 13 amp fuses are sometimes specified to prevent the fuse blowing at switch on.
The mains cable must be of suitable cross section for the fuse used
3 or 5 amp fuses usually does not make any difference
But 13 amp fuses would be unsafe

Thank you for your response.

I thought that it was unsafe to go higher, that could blow the Xbox circuit board?

But going lower would only fry the fuse in the cable and not damage the Xbox?

That's not how it works.

The new PSU is designed to deliver 3 amps, the xbox will attempt to suck 5 amp (asking more), this stresses the PSU.

IF xbox is all you are worried about, probably nothing will happen to it, other than it may run at a reduced performance, if you care about that.

But going lower would only fry the fuse in the cable and not damage the Xbox?
There is no fuse in modern electronics. In a perfect world, the PSU controls how much current it's able to deliver and no more and your xbox simply runs at a reduced performance, but you cannot rely on this assumption. Your call. I gave you info, up to you whether to follow it.

Hi

I presume you are in the uk plugs and fuses

And you are talking about the fuse in the plug
Mains Plug comply

with british standard 1363

In uk plugs usually have a fuses of 3, 5 or 13 Amps
To match both device rating and cable rating

3 amps at 240 volts is 720 watts
5 amps at 240 volts is 1200 watts
What does the data plate on the xbox say?

If xbox power rating less than 1.5 amps or 400 wats then 3 amp fuse is ok

If the plug only has 2 pins then it is not suitable or safe for use in the uk

If you mean two pins on connector at the back of the xbox that is another thing

Thank you, I really appreciate your help.

So when you say by reduced performance what can this mean in practical terms? I'm using the Xbox to play games and watch 4K UHD blurays, while also sometimes streaming UHD content from Netflix.

If it doesn't get enough power to run something I'm assuming that it will simply turn off?

@mbarnes86,

I meant two pins on back of Xbox and not on the plug.

Yes I am based in Uk.

Okay I checked on back of Xbox and it says this:

Rating: 100-240v
50/60hz, 1.8A

I'm assuming that means (along with your calculations) that the 3amp power lead will be fine?

Thanks

Thank you everyone for your help.

I've tried it out now and all seems to be safe for the few hours I've had it on anyway, I also do have an external USB attached (powered through USB slot) and a USB external charger. All seem to be working as normal.

The one problem I guess I may come across is that when I receive my kinect adapter, I think that attaches on to the end of the power lead and splits it to give power to the kinect.
I will see when that comes but for now all is fine.
