Hello,

For the past few hours I've been trying to solve an issue I've been having, but all the threads I read could not solve my issue. So, I've had to make this thread as a last resort, and I'd like to apologize in advance for needing help. Recently, I purchased an ethernet cable for my college dorm, and just tried to plug it in straight from the wall outlet into my laptop. However, when I do this the ethernet connection option pops up but it says "No Internet" below it. After plugging it in, my browser tries to load this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=219472&clcid=0x409, but it never fully loads since there is no ethernet internet. I know that it is not an issue with the internet overall, since I am still able to switch over to the wifi I've been using since I've gotten here.

A lot of the issues I've seen that people have had is that they've had out of date drivers for their ethernet adapter, so I went into the Control Panel to check it out. Under "Network Connections" in the ethernet option it says "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller, so I'm assuming that's my ethernet adapter for my laptop. In "Device Manager," I've checked and made sure that the driver does not have an exclamation or other warning sign, and also just installed the latest driver for this Realtek Family Device, which is 10.10.714.2016. Also under Network Connections, I right clicked on ethernet, hit Status, and saw that I do not have an IPv4 or IPv6 connection. Under "Details..." here is what it says:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Description: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
Physical Address: ‎54-EE-75-8B-7D-37
DHCP Enabled: Yes
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address: 169.254.22.229
IPv4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
IPv4 Default Gateway:
IPv4 DNS Server:
IPv4 WINS Server:
NetBIOS over Tcpip Enabled: Yes
Link-local IPv6 Address: fe80::3067:4cf8:2f13:16e5%9
IPv6 Default Gateway:
IPv6 DNS Servers: fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1, fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1, fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1

So overall, my questions are 1. Do I need to get a router or something? Is a wall-to-laptop connection not going to give me internet? And 2. What am I doing wrong? I figured buying the ethernet cable and plugging it in would be all I'd have to do, but this has just become a frustrating process for faster internet. If any more information is needed, I'd be happy to give it, although I'm not incredibly tech savvy so I'd need a little help in navigating any additional info needed. Thank you.

Solution
You are getting an autoconfig IP which is what the system gets when it can't get an IP from the DHCP server. You are in a college dorm, contact the college IT department.
