when i stress test it, it is hitting temps over 85c, is this bad? and what do i need to do to fix it. i've have the pc for a few years and just upgraded it over time. but i havent touched the cpu

I would call that danger zone. Do you use stock cooler for your cpu?

yes , its been in the case for 3 years ive been gaming on it. but i've recently changed the ram and gpus. and havent looked into anything else. i was expecting to be getting 60 fps on most games. but im hitting 45.

^ definitely confirm your cooling setup (including case fans/airflow)

What are you actually stress testing with? If PRime95, which version?

Definitely sounds on the high side: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1800828/intel-temperature-guide.html

Generally, 80'C+ a 100% load is in the 'potentially problematic' range. Your CPU can definitely operate in that space, but it's not recommended for sustained use.

i got the antec 1200 case with the 5 100m fans and the large fan on top. i also added a fan on the side panel. it has the standard cpu heatsink with the fan on it, just intel on it so im guessing its the standard one. would this affect my performance during games then? as i've noticed when playing games, my cpu only runs around 40% and cpus 50-70% but only doing 45 fps on far cry primal? surely thats wrong?

A stress test puts more 'stress' on your CPU than gaming (generally), so you're likely a few degrees 'safer' while gaming.

If it's the stock cooler, it's likely ~7 years old at this point, and probably not cooling as effectively as when it was new.
It could be failing, or it could simply need a good cleaning.

You could remount, and clean the cooler, and clean off the old/apply new thermal paste as a 'basic' solution - i'm not a big advocate for replacing thermal paste, as it doesn't 'dry out' too bad - which is a common misconception. But if this setup sat without use for a significant period of time, it's a good place to start.

Luckily, CPU cooler upgrades are fairly easy, and relatively cheap. Many coolers exist in the ~$20 space that would be huge improvements over the stock cooler.

Yeah I've used this pc for 3 years straight I do regularly blown out dust ect . I'm just trying to find the solution to my low fps issues. Trying to root out a possible bottleneck. But 45fps on my components are barely using 60% capability what's wrong why will it not use more usage and give me better framerates

Without knowing specific games/resolutions etc - I would hazard a guess at less than ideal SLI support.

Remember, SLI does not miraculously give you 2x the performance of a single GPU. SLI has to be supported to see any benefit (if not, you may actually see worse performance vs a single GPU), and supported/coded/maintained well.

What are you playing?
