So to start off, it happened a week ago.
I was playing a game while downloading something and then the whole screen went blue.
I downloaded crystaldiskinfo to see what is happening, and it shows "caution" and lots unreadable sectors.
I moved the important files to a flash drive and went ahead to try and fix it.
I did a scan from the boot menu - it said scan for consistency , and while it was scanning it showed lots of unreadable sectors.
It also failed the S.M.A.R.T scan
A few days later there was a system recovery option, in the "before 'starting windows' phase" it said it would reset to factory conditions, so i tried that and it failed. Also it failed to launch in safe mode
Then today, I tried to boot it again and it showed

" 1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure.
Failing Drive SATA 2
Failing Attribute # 05
"
f1: boot. I press f1 and it goes to a black screen.

That is basically the problems. The question is what do I do now, should i chuck the whole thing out and buy a new computer, or is it the hard drive problem, and all i need to do is buy a new hard drive?

Thanks, I hope what I wrote is understandable.

Solution
It would really depend on what is wrong with it.
You will need an enclosure for a 3.5' drive with a separate power cord, as the USB connection would be able to power up the drive by itself.

After that, you can test the drive and see what is wrong with it: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
Yeah, you can reformat it and see if you will get some decent performance. I wouldn't advise you to store important data over there though.

Hi there gametime153,

It's good that you've backed up your data.

As popatim said, you will need to get another drive. (RMA if under warranty)

If you buy another drive, you will need to perform clean OS installation. Do you have an OS CD?
In case your Win was OEM one, you will need to contact your computer manufacturer on the matter.

Hi, D_Know_WD
so RMA won't work because it way past warranty date.
I don't have a OS disk, i looked up the hp website and to get the disk is like $50
http://support.hp.com/us-en/mediaorder/hp-pavilion-hpe-h8-1200-desktop-pc-series/5187019/model/5192439/softwareitem/C4G69AV/step1

So if i plan to get a new hard drive and buy windows 10 will that work?
For a hard drive will something like this work?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088PUEPK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks again.

Yeah, it would work to get a new drive and Win 10.
Yes, the HDD will work, it is a 3.5' one. You have a desktop machine right?

As for the two OSes, it seems that one of those is OEM, which means that once you install it on one system, you can really move it to another.

Hi again,
It seems like I know what to do next,
The final question is, is it possible to format the "dead hard drive" using a external connector or something and use it as a storage?

It would really depend on what is wrong with it.
