Hi I'm looking to get a new graphics card but unsure which one will work for my system, specs are i7-920@2.66ghz, gigabyte ga-ex58-ud5, 8gb ram. I'm currently looking at a gtx 970 but unsure if it'll work, thanks!

Solution
It'll work if you have a good enough power supply, but unless you can get a 970 for ~$150 or less used and are sure it hasn't been abused, it's probably a better decision to get an RX 480 4GB.

For your CPU, which is a little outdated, I would recommend a GTX 760 Ti unless you were going to be looking to upgrade your CPU within a year's time. This won't be bottlenecked, and it is relatively cheap, only costing $120 or so. The 970 would be a good choice if you were planning to upgrade your CPU soon.

I... no.

That i7 is perfectly capable of keeping up with something much more powerful than a 760 Ti. Will it bottleneck in a handful of poorly-optimized games? Possibly. But is that really a good reason to get a graphics card several orders of magnitude lesser?

Chemma pretty much nailed it. Unless you can get a really good deal on the 970, a new, midrange card is going to be better value.

760 ti? Am I missing something (as far as I know you can only get them as an OEM part from Dell)? Why would you buy something outdated for the sole purpose of not being bottlenecked when you can get something faster that can be carried over into your next build?

This. Especially when a 970 / 1060 really wouldn't be bottlenecked in most cases anyways.

Woah, okay so pus is 750w and Ive only spent 420$ Australian on my PC, if I have to overclock I have a gammaxx 300 CPU cooler in and I've got 7 fans running on my case, and as for a 970, my friend is upgrading to a 1080 and said we could make a deal on his 970! So I guess I'll be getting that, so it won't over bottleneck?

So I won't have to overclock?

The only reason I suggested it was because it was cheap and it would work well with the CPU. I've had a lot of issues trying to use a GTX 960 with an i7-950. Sorry if I'm a little biased with my answer, but swapping a 960 in that build with a 1060 makes a half FPS average difference. And it's actually half down, not up. This was across testing of more than one, and they're not poorly optimized.

Going down a notch brought me at the 760 Ti, which surprisingly enough can still pull ultra in a lot of games.

Sorry if I didn't know, but it's what I've learned from experience. I'll need to check those FPS counts again. They don't sound right anymore. Too bad I've sold the build to a friend. Probably could get a few scores from him.

Don't listen to my ramblings right now No0b_with_pc, I'm just being an idiot.

Sounds like there may have been more issues going on with the rig than just a bottleneck, then.

Clearly it's from using electrical tape instead of duct tape. ;)

Hush you.

It sounds like it. Too bad I don't have it anymore or else I would've attacked that issue. I probably chalked it up to it not being able to find any issues. It was probably a compatibility issue. Oh well. Moving on.
