I have a friend who is saving up for a computer that I am going to build for him, to convince the pc gaming is better, as the only substantial games console he is is a wii u.

the budget is around £300-400, and I was thinking of putting a g4400 and a 1050/1050ti to maximise price to performance, but looking back on this, I realise I might have a bottleneck?

Would the g4400 bottleneck the 1050/ti?

Thanks

Not really bottleneck but many newer games aren't going to run well with the Pentium G. Anyway you can budget an i3 6100? The i3 is a dual core as well but it has Hyperthreading and that makes a huge difference.

Depends on the apps your friend likes. Gaming, in general, core usage beyond 2 are quite common now. Expect any games that display intricate physics, detailed graphical fidelity, extensive AI and lots of animation assets to be design revolving more than 2 CPU threads. Regardless the engine they used.

But honestly, I think G4400 is quite decent.

Thankyou, I quite like the processor as well, I have an i5 6500, and I love it!

Honestly, I think an i3 for him is probably better, because he wants it to last a while. I would go for an fx 8320, but those cpus are pretty too un upgradable, and outdated

The i3 6100 beats an FX 8xxx in most gaming benchmarks. Most productivity benchmarks as well. Factor in the beefier motherboard and aftermarket cooling needed to overclock the AMD chip to make it competitive with the i3 and you are spending the same as you would have on an i5 which the AMD chips can't touch.

Okay, thankyou. Do you know if there will be a new socket or not?

There's no new socket with Kaby Lake, they are still using LGA 1151.. Most existing Z170 boards and some of the lower end boards have already received BIOS updates to support the new chips. There will be a 2xx series chipset released specifically for Kaby Lake but as I said the older 1xx series boards will support it as well. And the new 2xx series should support Skylake.

Oh nice, I have an i5 6500 so I might upgrade to the new i5/i7 if it's worth it

LGA1151 socket. To be on the safe side, it's always best to check if the mobu will support the cpu. Keep in mind that upgrading the bios of a mobu requires first a compatible cpu. Expected price for G4600 (3.6GHz) is 87$ and for G4620 (3.7GHz) 98$. Both probably with hyperthreading, but no official confirmation by Intel yet. Availability expected end this year or beginning next year. Kaby Lake i3 with HT starting from 150$, so G4600 looks attractive. Probably the G4600 will lack some features of i3 (AVX ?) and have a lower spec GPU, which does not matter if you plan using a separate GPU. Looking at the Ghz, the G4600 should be minimal 10% faster than the G4400 (3.3GHz) in single thread.

There are no IPC gains going from Skylake to Kaby only increased efficiency allowing for higher clocks.

Everything is mostly still rumor. We are pretty sure there's going to be a 'K' sku, fully unlocked i3 this time around though.
