I am getting an old Dell OptiPlex 760 for school use, and it comes with the Pentium D 945. However, I have a Core 2 Duo E8600 lying around, and I was wondering if it would provide better performance for all my school-multitasking usage. Thanks!

Solution
The E8600 is a good fast 2 core chip, that and the E8400, E8500 and give a good Blowfish benchmark. Its a higher evolutionary chip than Pentium D.

Here is the side by side comparison.

The difference is not massive so you wont gain much by swapping. I have previously tried to swap the chip from Dell Optiplex Pentium D with a E5300 and it didnt run even though the upgrade list suggested it would run.
