Exactly my point. I much prefer a USB DAC to a soundcard to eliminate the software issues sound cards are plagued with. And onboard sound shouldn't be much worse. If going for a soundcard I'd get one with a headphone amp. But if going to that length I prefer the DAC with integrated headphone amp.

Of course good speakers/headphones are more important than a good soundcard. But that's another discussion. A $100 soundcard on $20 speakers would be better spent on $125 headphones with onboard sound.

The Xonar DX has dolby headphone for virtual surround sound with headphones. A feature great for gaming.

Personally before dropping $100 on a soundcard I'd drop $150 on a nice USB DAC. SOmething like the M-Audio Super DAC. Not driver dependant so it'll work all the time in any version of windows in the future. It's super silent with crystal clear sound. Has an integrated headphone amp the $100 sound card does not. It has headphone and stereo outs for your speakers and you can switch between them with a switch. Also with Razer Surround you can still get the virtual surround for gaming.

I'd get a DAC before a cheap sound card.
