I'm currently interested in a custom loop for my PC. I LOVE the look of water cooled systems and want to try it out. I am only cooling my CPU due to low budget issues. I would not like to put more than 300$ into it. I need just need necessary things. to put towards the loop. I'm not looking for the best parts just something that's reliable. I need to know the best bang for the buck. Case I am using : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16811854023 . I have a hard time understanding Fittings as well. I was never good with measurements. If anyone can explain how it works for hard tubing that would be awesome! The reason I am not using soft tubing is because of plasticizers and it getting cloudy. My build is going to be red with possibly white fluid or red fluid.

Here is my build currently:

-GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0) LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard

-MSI GeForce GTX 1060 DirectX 12 GTX 1060 3GT OC 3GB 192-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready ATX Video Card

-EVGA 600 B1 100-B1-0600-KR 80+ BRONZE 600W

-Intel Core i5-6500 6MB Skylake Quad-Core 3.2 GHz LGA 1151 65W BX80662I56500 Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 530

-Team Delta 8GB (2 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) Desktop Memory Model TDTRD48G2400HC15ADC01

-WD Blue 1TB Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD10EZEX

This is kinda what I'm going for: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/QdQV3C
(within budget, would like to primarily use angled fittings instead of curving the tube bc I am a noob)

If anyone has any suggestions I am open to them! Thanks!

Thanks for your input, I recently purchased my system about a week ago on newegg. I still am able to return my processor I believe. I realize now that I didn't get an unlocked version of the i5. I am hoping to get a refund on that and repurchase the unlocked version. Main reason for the custom watercooling is for looks and for the experience. Do you think it would be cheaper to go for soft tubing? It seems a heck of a lot easier. Is plasticizer that occurs very often in soft tubing? or is it something that only happens with lesser quality tubing? Also do you think that I can build a simple WC loop with my price range? ($300)

Hi there. Welcome to the forums. I'll try to help out if I can. I have the same motherboard, HDD, and CPU in my HTPC. Great performance. With that said, any particular reason your not getting an unlocked CPU for the Z170 series? I had a good deal on mine, and wanted to stay on budget and the build wasn't planned with OCing in mind.

In regards to PETG, I'm using in my main system and very happy with results. With your plans, the fittings are where things add up cost wise quick. You'll see G 1/4 mentioned when looking around. These are the threaded size for the fittings to attach to eachother. Basicically, the fittings that attach to blocks, rads, reservoir, pumps, and other fittings use this size. The other end of the fitting can vary depending on tube size and type. I'm using Primochill PETG 1/2" tubing with their Rigid Revolver fittings. They also make larger diameter tubing. To be sure, your max budget is $300 for everything watercooling related? Even with all this said, outside of looks, custom WC is way overkill for a i5 6500. Mine is aircooled with stock cooler and never goes over 55C.

Hello again. I see you're returning the CPU. A good idea I'm thinking if you plan to utilize all that cooler power from custom loop to OC. Regarding tubing, there are pros and cons of each, as I've used both. For soft tubing, I've always went with Primochill LRT advanced, and had no plasticizer issues. There are many types of soft tubing, and some are harder to work with that others. Primochill LRT doesn't want to bend easily, and you really have to force it to go where you want it to. I had to wrestle quite a few times to get compression fittings started on soft tubing. Plus, I could never get the look I wanted. Other brands of soft tubing are said to be much more flexible though. Fittings can also get expensive with either tubing type. For rigid tubing, it looks much better when you're finished in my opinion. You can get everything setup with a clean look. However, get "the bends" just right can be a real pain, time consuming, and go through a lot of tubing depending on your skill level at bending. If you're going with straight cuts of PETG, that eliminates the bending, but requires more fittings of course for all the turns which raises the cost.

The budget should work with good planning and parts selection. I'd figure out exactly what layout you're looking for when planning your loop. Otherwise, you'll end up with to many or to little fittings than you need. I didn't plan to much my first time, and had tons of fittings I didn't need.

  • ■ Either use angled adapters/fittings or PETG bending kit, the idea is to obtain better air flows inside the case, BTW what case you have?
    ■ Don't be afraid of rigid tubing mod, my experience doing bending work was not such fiddly as I imagined b4, there're plenty video tutorial 4 u. I suggest you start simple sketching to estimate shortest tube use, or just copy from the video tutorials which loop suite your liking.
    ■ Primochill and other PC watercooler vendors use tygon brand, later tygon clear tube is proven to be best for its ability to maintain clearness and friction resistance. The only nuisance is from bio organics on coolant, without proper maintenance, the gunk build up will have been causing flow rate reduce and possibly pressure drop which lead to diminishing cooling performance.
    ■ I won't provide you with parts because too many price differential and shipping cost, aside from the aesthetic taste, custom loop is suppose to be OCed build solution where air cooling is no longer an option. For the skylake custom loop build, any low flow rate pump will suffice, http://www.performance-pcs.com/xspc-raystorm-extreme-universal-cpu-watercooling-kit-w-ax360-radiator-750-pump-res.html
