I am thinking of upgrading my processor from a i5 4670k to and i7 4790k, but I am concerned that the i7 4790k may not support next gen gaming. Also, i am thinking of upgrading my GPU from a gtx 770 to a gtx 1070, can both the i7 4790k and gtx 1070 support next gen games? If not, any recommendations on which processor and gpu that can support next gen gaming would be accepted, thank you!

I still run modern AAA games with an i5-2500K, so you'll have no trouble with a 4670K. Only a handful of games will utilise the extra CPU threads of the 4790K, so it's not a good upgrade when it comes to value for money.

A GTX 1070 will offer a substantial improvement over a GTX 770. I recently upgraded to an RX 480 from a GTX 770 and the performance increase was huge.

Depends on ur resolution and quality.settings.of game and types of game the ideas will be change
But if u wanna play in fhd with 45_55fps in high settings u are good to go and use this build upgrade
Dont worry about next gen games. It will work fine but if u wanna play in ultra settings on qhd or 4k u must afford 1080 and 6th generations of i7 cpus

no one has mentioned QHD or 4k, the current i5 is perfectly fine but the 770 to 1070 would be a very nice bump in performance. The best bang for buck for the OP is the 1070, consider a platform upgrade post skylake, or the generation after that IF it is showing signs of being too slow. Overclocking the i5 would give more benefit than the i7.

Well currently, I have been playing a lot of overwatch. When I run this game I am pulling a load between 45 and 60 percent on my cpu, and using using about 80% of ram when playing. Should I be alarmed by these figures? Also, my cpu gets around 40 degrees Celsius. Should I upgrade anything to lower these numbers??

Im not sure what my GPU utilization is, how do I check that? And what about my CPU and RAM? Should i be worried about those numbers?

the GPU load is 99% when playing over watch, about 8% when idle

seeing how this is the case, do you think it is necessary to upgrade my CPU(i5 4670k)? Or is simply upgrading to a 1070 gpu enough? If so, do you think overclocking is necessary for the i5 4670k and gtx 1070 combo?

although the i5 can handle the gtx 1070, how would this combo do for a game like the newest battlefield?

When I say it can handle it, I mean it can fully utilize the 1070 and not bottleneck it in almost any game. Battlefield 1 is a game that is very demanding on the video card, not the processor, as is the case with most newer AAA titles. You would max out the 1070 with BF1 before you would max out your processor.

Long story short, your system would be able to easily run almost any title (with the exception of poorly optimized games) in 1080p on highest settings and get 60fps, and could also do pretty well in 2k or 4k if you wanted to. There are plenty of people running a 4670k with a 1070, I would recommend checking out some videos on YouTube to see if that's the performance you're looking for.
