802.11ad Backwards Compatible

Good day all,

Pretty easy question, but I cannot get a solid answer:

The newer wireless routers from Netgear and TP-Link support three bands, a 2.4, a 5gz, and a 60gHz ad band.

If I have no ad compatible devices yet can the ad/60Ghz band accept regular AC devices to connect (similar to regular tri-band routers) or is that band "locked" until a 60Ghz device connects?

Thanks,

  1. If you don't have and .ad devices, they will never see the 60Ghz signal. Just like a 2.4Ghz device never sees the 5Ghz signal.
  2. So until then, this is basically a dual band router?
