Hi there,

I was looking to upgrade my PC with another GTX 970, to be used in partnership with my original one. I was looking around and didn't quite get if I needed to upgrade my Motherboard (MSI Z97 Gaming 3). Would be pleased if this got answered.

Solution
That motherboard is setup for Crossfire with AMD cards. Instead of replacing the motherboard and buying a second 970 you should just replace your 970 with a GTX 1070 and sell the existing card.
This motherboard doesn't support SLI so you can't add another 970 card to it. You could go with two AMD RX 470s or two RX 480s if you really want dual GPU configuration.

Otherwise you'll have to change the motherboard which may open a whole host of new issues to deal with. Like do you go Intel or AMD, if AMD do you wait for the ZEN, if Intel do you go Gen 4, 6 or wait for gen 7, then there is reinstalling Windows...

What if I choose to replace my 970 with a 1080 instead of a 1070?
My PSU is an EVGA 750W G1 80+.

Up to you if you want to spend the money on a 1080, it will run with that power supply. A GTX 1070 is a decent upgrade to a 970, if your CPU can handle the 1080 and you are OK with spending that much, up to you if you want to go higher.
