So this Christmas I was thinking about upgrading my i5-4440 cpu. I am deciding whether I should upgrade to the i7-4690k or if i should upgrade to the i7-6700k, but if i were to upgrade to skylake I would also have to upgrade my motherboard and ram. Any thoughts on what I should get?

Do you mean I5-4690K, or I7-4790K? From a cpu capability point of view, either would be a substantial upgrade, more so if you have an overclocking capable motherboard.
If your need for performance in games, consider that your graphics card may be the limiting factor.
Skylake does have some advantages like heat and performance per clock.
Worth is something only YOU can determine.
Likely, skylake is not worth it unless you have no budget limitations and you simply want the best.
