GPU: ROG STRIX-GTX1070-8G-GAMING (No overclock)
CPU: i5 4690k @ 4.5 ghz
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97P-D3
RAM: Corsair CML8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz CL9 XMP
PSU: Antec TruePower Classic 650 Watt
Operating System & Version: Windows 10 64 Bit OS Build 14393.447 (Upgrade from Windows 7)
GPU Drivers: 372.70

I just upgraded to the Asus Strix GTX 1070 (non oc) from a Sapphire R9 280 and I game on a 3440x1440 UltraWide monitor at 60hz (non g sync or freesync). I've noticed a great deal of stuttering (not constant but frequent) in games such as GTA V, BF1, WWE 2K16 and Just Cause 3.

GTA V

All settings are on very high except grass and advanced graphics settings are enabled except shadow, GPU and distance scaling. After an hour of gaming the stuttering occurs but the fps doesn't drop, in fact it fluctuates between 70 and 90 fps with v sync disabled.

The GPU is 60 degrees and so is my CPU, so I guess thermal throttling is out of the question and I play on full screen mode. VRAM usage is under 4GB and the GPU hasn't been overclocked so it's running at stock settings. Only anti aliasing enabled is FXAA and the stuttering is worse when its disabled. Enabling priority to high hasn't really helped either.

Another thing to note is that stutter happens more when I enable V sync which brings down the GPU usage to about 40 to 60%.Turning options down to high doesn't help either.

Just Cause 3

All options have been maxed out (FXAA enabled) and similar to GTA V, when v sync is enabled the stuttering is worse but its lesser when disabled. Difference here is that when the game stutters the fps does drop by about 20 fps. When v sync is disabled It fluctuates between 70 to 90 fps and GPU usage goes from 50% to 99% with temps in the 60's. I've tried using the different v sync methods in the NVIDIA control panel instead but they make the game stutter constantly.

Other Games

Games such as Assassins Creed Syndicate, The Witcher 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider exhibit little to no noticeable stuttering at all.

Micron Memory

Overclocking hasn't been that great and I'm not sure whether it's the Micron memory or I lost the silicon lottery. The I can do is 1910 on the Core Clock and 8708 on the Memory Clock which results in a 6 fps gain. By updating the BIOS (to 86.04.50.00.64) as recommended by ASUS, higher overclocks have not been gained and the stuttering still remains.

A world wide issue?

From research I've done so far this issue with the stuttering has been reported by a lot of i5 users; in particular Haswell CPU's. Even certain i7 4790K users have the issue and even those with a I7 6700K. So what is the solution to this problem? Some have blamed NVIDIA and I'm sure they have blamed Windows. I've found that the latest NVIDIA update (375.70) made the stuttering worse, so I reverted to an older update on the ASUS support page for my Strix; 372.70. When I first got my GTX 1070 I used DDU to remove any instance of AMD drivers and when upgrading to a new NVIDIA driver I also use DDU to remove the old version. Prefer maximum performance in the control pannel has also been enabled.

I never experienced any of these issues with my R9 280 and this has been a disappointing return to NVDIA so far. At one point I thought of replacing my Strix for the MSI Gaming X model but I fear the results will be the same. It would also seem there is an issue with v sync with the GTX 1070 I like to use it to remove screen tearing. I hope the solution isn't to buy a g sync pannel. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated by not only me but many others in the same boat.

I'd also consider picking up an SSD, before making any other upgrades. Some newer games are loading assets from the storage drive, while you're playing. Jumping from an HDD to a modern SSD, like a Samsung 850 EVO, could have a drastic improvement there. Not to mention all the other benefits that come with an SSD.

Good luck, hopefully one of those solutions, or the next driver released resolves your issues.

Have you messed around with the Geforce Experience utility? Let it configure a few settings (especially some of the NVIDIA proprietary stuff) and see how that looks.

Honestly, if you're seeing GPU usage spike to 99% in some games, on a 1440p UltraWide, it may just be you maxing out your rig.

I've actually seen a number of users complain about the 375 driver, so you're not alone there.

How about system memory? Is that usage approaching 100%?

Thank you for your suggestion. I have played games with Geforce Experience reccomended settings and it didnt make a difference to GTA V. However I have tried using Fast sync, with triple buffering enabled and Trilinear optimisation off with Single display performance on and prefer maximum performance enabled in games.

Doing this delayed the stuttering in GTA V by 3 hours instead of 30 minutes using Driver version 368.81. In Just Cause 3 the stuttering has seemingly stopped with this driver. Rise of the Tomb Raider has no stuttering but Killing Floor 2 does and only uses 80% GPU and something low like 30% CPU.

Also in GTA V I've noticed the CPU usage fluctiates between 60 to 90% and when the stutter happens in can go low as 13% for a second. So dont know whether to updgrade to a 4790k or increase my overclock on the 4690K. CPU usage also varied between what task manager was saying and MSI afterburner. While driving task manager was reporting 100% cpu usage and msi was saying 60 to 80%.

So an upgrade has crossed my mind becuase all drivers have been updated and latency readings in LatencyMon seem to be fine.

In terms of memory 8GB RAM seems to be fine with GTA V using a max of 5 gig.

Do you think an increase in RAM to 16GB and upgrading to a 4790K will alleviate the problem?

Worse case scenario I was thinking of selling this PC and building one with a i7 5820K.

Any suggestions or point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Do you have stuttering in certain games too? Thanks, I will also let you know through updates here.

Are you saying you've watched the memory hit 5GB total in Windows Resource Manager, or just that GTA5 uses about 5GB total? I ask because I have a similar rig (3 x 1080p) that was bumping 8GB limit all the time, until I pulled the trigger on a new ram kit.

This may be a stupid question, but have you tried removing the overclock completely, and playing at stock, just to confirm that's not contributing?

I'd wait for the next driver release before purchasing anything. I don't think you need a CPU upgrade at this point, but if you did. An i7-6700k would be a better bang for your buck.

Sorry I should have clarified that. I saw it hit 5GB total in both the task manager and MSI Afterburner overlay. On the odd occasion when I was driving through the city with a lot f traffic it would fluctuate to 6GB.

That has crossed my mind, thank you for bring that up. I'll try it tomorrow, at the moment I'm defragging my 1TB HDD and will be checking for errors to see if theres an issue there. Did a HDD check last week but things could have changed.

A new driver has come out a couple hours ago I believe (375.86), that's also on my list.

Absolutely agree, the 6700K would be a bit cheaper but I found a 5820K for £250 but after looking at cost of Memory and motherboard 6700K would be better If I was building from scratch. However thats a last resort, the i5 4690K should technically be fine. Hopefully the new driver fixes this issue. I'll keep you updated.
