On my Windows 7 laptop. I have a Black Screen Of Death with no blinking cursor. Boot disk, back-up on external hard drive, and thumb drive won't work.
I really would like to get it going again.

Solution
Hey there again, @Shelley_9!

Do you hear the hardware power up whenever you get the Black Screen of Death and switch on the laptop? If it does work, the issue could be in the display itself, so you could also try connecting an external monitor to determine if the issue is coming from the LCD on the laptop. If the problem is still present afterwards and resetting BIOS doesn't change anything as well, I'd totally agree with @tekno2go and second the suggestion to change the CMOS battery.

If you don't want to do this by yourself, I'd definitely advise you to end the struggle of DIY troubleshooting and get the laptop to the nearest PC repair service shop and let the guys there perform full system diagnostics. They could easily help you...
Welcome to the community, @Shelley_9!

This sounds pretty unfortunate. Did you made any significant changes prior to the boot error with the Black screen of death? I'd suggest you try to boot into BIOS and see what is going on there. Make sure that the laptop detects the HDD and also check the boot order. If you want to use a recovery OS disk, you will need to list it in the boot order. Is this laptop new or old? If it's still covered by the warranty, I'd strongly recommend you contact the manufacturer's/reseller's customer support for assistance. You should be able to RMA it and they should take care of the replacement of any failed component. Once you into BIOS, try resetting it through the settings in the interface. Hopefully, this will allow you to boot properly into the recovery environment at least. Can you share some pics/screenshots of the issue as well?

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting & good luck!

I've tried that already. I've tried the boot disk, the repair disk, booting from my xhd, because it's a good backup.
The result is the same, the oly happening is the light on the caps lock keeps blinking very slowly.

The solution beyond that is solution.

Stating "I've done all that", isn't answering a specific question, such as some of the questions Supersoph also asked. We don't know your results.

Try opening the laptop and removing the cmos battery to clear the bios? New cmos battery may help.
