I have a XFX 850W Fully Modular Black Edition power supply. It is made by Seasonic and has excellent reviews. I recently built my first custom water loop and started looking at custom power supply cables, like cable mod. I then realized that my current pcie cables are dual 6+2 pin on the video card side and a single 8 pin on the power supply side. I noticed this when I first got the power supply but I never thought about it after installing it. I know the power supply can handle it because it is a single 12v rail power supply. What I don't know is if the wires can handle the load of a heavily overclocked 980ti. I have been using it that way for some time with no issues but I started doing some research and I came across this: https://seasonic.com/faq/
According to that link I should not be connecting a high power video card, like the 980ti, using the dual 6+2 pin pcie cable that is included with the power supply. Instead I should be using 2 single 8 pin cables for each video card. Of course those cables are not included with the power supply. All of the custom cable manufacturers seem to include dual 6+2 pin pcie cables in their kits as well.

I don't know what the maximum wattage is that type of cable can handle before it becomes dangerous. I wouldn't have thought this would be an issue since it has been working fine in my system this way for a while. I haven't gamed for hours on end with the cards overclocked though and now that I am water cooled I plan on pushing them hard.

So can a cable with dual 6+2 pin pcie on the video card side and a single 8 pin on the power supply side handle the wattage of a heavily overclocked 980ti? I know the power supply can handle it. I am just concerned about the actual cable. Especially if I end up spending money on custom cables. I am leaning towards getting 4 single 8 pin cables just to be safe but Custom Cables doesn't make a kit like that and it is much more expensive to order the cables a la carte.

Solution
Two cables, each with two six/eight-pin connectors for video cards, 22” (56 cm) to the first connector, 3.9” (10 cm) between connectors
You should be using those 2 cables for the video card.
If your cables are routed behind the motherboard tray then you can also just buy extension cables instead of the whole cable like this.

You should of gotten 6 X 6+2 pin connectors. all that is saying is if you have a single cable with 2X 6+2 pin connectors coming off of it to only use one of those connectors and run another 6+2 pin from the power supply for 225 Watt video cards or higher.

These are the cables it came with:

Main motherboard cable with a 20/24-pin connector, 23.6” (60 cm) long
One cable with two ATX12V connectors that together form an EPS12V connector, 25.2” (64 cm) long
One cable with one EPS12V connector, 25.2” (64 cm) long
Two cables, each with two six/eight-pin connectors for video cards, 22” (56 cm) to the first connector, 3.9” (10 cm) between connectors
Two cables, each with four SATA power connectors, 15.7” (40 cm) to the first connector, 4.7” (12 cm) between connectors
One cable with two SATA power connectors, 12.6” (32 cm) to the first connector, 4.7” (12 cm) between connectors
One cable with three peripheral power connectors, 15.7” (40 cm) to the first connector, 4.7” (12 cm) between connectors
One cable with two peripheral power connectors, 12.6” (32 cm) to the first connector, 4.7” (12 cm) between connectors
Two adapters to convert a standard peripheral power connector into a floppy disk drive power connector
