I just purchased a Samsung V-nand 850 EVO SSD as a second drive to run lightroom. I am keeping my regular drive intact. When I installed, the magician software says the new SSD is not in AHCI mode. What steps do I take to get it up and running. I do not want to make it a boot drive.

Hey there, leoindover.

Not being in AHCI mode is not that big of a deal actually. If you want to change the SATA mode for your SATA controller, you should do a little bit of editing in the Regedit and switch it from the BIOS settings afterwards. Here's how to do it: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2347183/change-ide-ahci-reinstall-windows.html.

Also, if the drive is brand new, you should initialize it before you're able to partition and format it. Here's how to do that: How to initialize or write a signature to a secondary hard drive or Solid State drive in Windows.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if there's anything else.

There's a fairly well-known bug in the Samsung Magician software in that it falsely reports no AHCI SATA controller mode when that mode has actually been enabled in the BIOS. The likelihood is that's the SATA controller mode in your situation. You should be able to access your motherboard's BIOS and check that setting if you're so inclined.
