I just built a pc today and noticed I purchased the wrong frequency ram. I bought 3400MHz and my motherboard manual says it only supports 2133/2400MHz ddr4.

Quote...
"4 x DIMM, max. 64GB, DDR4 2400/2133 MHz, non-ECC, un- buffered memory
Dual channel memory architecture
Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Pro le (XMP)
* Hyper DIMM support is subject to the physical characteristics of individual CPUs. Please refer to Memory QVL (Qualified Vendors List) for details.
** Refer to www.asus.com or this user guide for the complete Memory QVL (Qualified Vendors List)."

Could this cause any startup or preformance problems if I use the 3400MHz ddr4?

Specs:
i7 6700k
Sabertooth z170 mark 1
Corsair hx1000i
1080

Solution
If 2400 is max for the mobo sort of a waste of money to run more expensive 3400 sticks. They should run OK, may want to tight up timings which may set loosely at the lower data rates

No you're fine; if you can return the RAM to get a lower rater one for the money than do so, but if you use higher MHz ram for a lower MHz slot it won't break anything. The way it works is that whatever the max frequency for the mobo is is what the RAM will run at.
