Hello. I built a new PC yesterday, running an SSD and a WD Black 2TB HDD (WD2003FZEX). The WD Black makes a weird grinding like noise on shut down and only on shutdown, otherwise it seems to be ok. Here's a video someone else made describing the same problem (noise at 00:26): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpsdrIa4wjM . Mine makes the exact same sound. I see other people are commenting on the video, including a person with the same model as mine, saying theirs makes the same noise. That gives me the impression that this is normal, although I'm still concerned. This being a new purchase, I want to do an RMA, but I want to make sure that this kind of noises are not normal. Has anyone else experienced a similar noise and should I return the drive?

I did try to move the drive to a different slot, even tried it in the old PC, same noise.

Hi there okacat,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(

I believe the first thing you should really do is to back up the data stored on the drive. This is not a sound that a mechanical drive should make.
After that, you can attach the drive with different SATA and power cables, to another SATA port. If the issue persists, you can run both short and extended DLG tests on the drive: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=PokUa7

If the issue persists even swapping the cables or if the DLG tests show that there's something wrong with the drive, then I believe you should have no issues RMAing the drive. You can either contact the place you got it from or our Support...

Thank you! Swapping cables/places/PCs has no effect, the issue still persists even though DLG tests pass. I will proceed with an RMA.

I did an RMA with the place I got the disk from, received a new drive in sealed packaging. It makes the same noise. Could it be something wrong with the series? I don't mind the noise too much, as long as it doesn't mean that something is wrong with the drive. I did not do an RMA with WD, since that would require me to cover the shipping costs one way, which comes to almost 1/3 of the price of the drive, and this being a premium drive it's not cheap. The whole thing's just really frustrating, especially so since I paid more for a premium drive instead of just getting a regular priced one.

Hi, I bought the same WD Black 2TB HDD (WD2003FZEX) few days ago.

It makes strange noise:
1. when Windows itself turns the HDD off after some idle time period (I mean after idle time that can be set in Control panel -> Power options -> Change plan settings -> Change advanced power settings)
2. when turning off the PC.

I recorded it: https://youtu.be/GI2TDff_eVc?t=5s
Turn your sound to max to hear it properly. It sounds like a dying animal.

Does your HDD make that noise when Windows turns it off after some idle time period? (not only when shutting down the whole PC)

I understand your HDD got the same problem, even after RMAing it. I don't mind that sound that much but I'm worried about HDD failure and data loss. Is your HDD running well even with this sound?

Hi,

there were no other issues with Hdd but i couldnt stand those noises. It also vibrates so badly my fingers on a keyboard tremble - while having a Cooler Master Silentio case with foam, rubber stands and everything. I had to return the disk to the seller which was an e-shop. You may return stuff you bought online within 14 days from purchase and e-shop is obliged to refund you. I bought WD AV green power 2TB instead and I am very happy with it. Quiet operation and no vibrations.

Regards,
Ben-Erai
