So I'm running crossfire r9 270x and I wanted to switch to a single card.
I have a 1440p monitor that I'd like to utilize.

budget is about $600-$700

I was thinking the GTX 1080 but wanted to make sure my hardware would work with it (I'm not the best at knowing these things) I just want to make sure it would run well with what I have and if anyone had any recommendations to consider. I know there are a lot of intelligent people here.

Build
Motherboard: Asus z97-pro gamer
CPU i5-4460
Power supply nex750b
Ram 16GB GDDR5
no liquid cooling

I'd hate to buy something and not be setup to run it or need more work done (which I'm limited at)
Thanks in advanced to anyone providing advice.

For running at 1440p the GTX 1070 is probably the best bang for the buck. As for your hardware working with the 1070 or the 1080, you should be fine. The only question I would have is to exactly what power supply do you have? If you have a low end PSU, it could do bad things to a high end video card.

"I have a good amount of airflow but no cooling." what does that mean exactly?
also what's the exact model of your PSU? because if it's rated for 750W but can only deliver 400W on the 12V rail (as some older designs do) then a 1080 could be unsupported

I assume that you meant DDR3 for your ram, GDDR is graphics card memory :D

Your system should be fine for a 1080. However, if you wanted to spend a little less on the graphics card and upgrade your processor, you could go with a 1070. I recommend the EVGA GTX 1070 FTW, it will run games at mostly high settings in 1440p.

Recommendation:
EVGA GTX 1070 - https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=evga+gtx+1070+ftw

MSI Pro Solution Z170A - https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Solution-Z170A-Motherboard-SLI/dp/B01DDR05P6/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1479308181&sr=1-5&keywords=1151+motherboard

Intel Core i3-6100 - https://www.amazon.com/Intel-i3-6100-Cache-Processor-BX80662I36100/dp/B015VPX2EO/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1479308308&sr=1-1&keywords=6100

OR

Intel Core i5-6500 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010T6CWI2/ref=twister_B01M8HPUO6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
*Slighly over your budget, but some might say it's worth it :)

But in answer to your question, yes a 1080 would work.

upgrading from a i5-4460 quad core to an i3-6100 dual core is so much not worth it
the 4460 is actually faster
also the 6500 is basically the same speed apart from some benchmarks where it runs around 5-10% faster.
purchasing a new board + ram + cpu is the opposite of a good deal.
