Due to some recent sales I may be upgrading my i7-4970k to an i7-6700k, but want some advice on how this may affect my rig. Will I need to reformat(in which case I will not upgrade) or will this be okay as is and what are somethings I should do or look for before doing the upgrade itself. I've asked a similar question with regards to upgrading the CPU and Mobo, but don't need to upgrade both just the CPU.

The 6700k is only marginally better than the 4790k (some benchmarks actually show the 4790k ahead).

I have both and they are so close it doesn't really matter.

You should buy a good cooler and overclock your 4790k instead. That will be a pretty good increase.

Thanks since that and maybe a bigger case were some other things I wanted to do. Not the correct place I know and sorry ahead of time, but what coolers should I got for? My current is an Antec Kuhler H20 650. What would be a good increase in terms of freezing power?

Edit: Performance of Cooler>>>Noise level. I can see it getting a little annoying, but I don't care about noise as much as I do about it's sheer performance of the product.

This is actually the perfect place for that question. :p

My hands down favorite budget cooler is still the Hyper 212. You can also replace the fan on it with ANY 120mm fan so you can make it as quiet as you want. (the stock fan in it is pretty quiet though too).

If you are going to spend more there are some killer air coolers out there.

My current fan is this one.

Would want something better/more powerful. Again, noise is a near insignificant factor.

Edit: How would I go about setting the cooler to keep the CPU at a certain temperature? I ask since I may OC it at some point and want to know what I'm doing
