I am planning to build a computer soon and I wanted to ask if I should go ahead and get the I7-6700k or wait for Kaby Lake since they both use the same socket.

Solution

The Tom's Hardware preview for Kaby Lake was pretty disappointing... negligible improvement over Skylake and poor overclock-ability. With that being said, the sample sent to Tom's may have been a dud, or the benchmarks may have been a fluke. More testing will be needed to determine Kaby's true potential.

If you can hold off till January 5th, that's when both Kaby Lake and the Z270 motherboards will officially be released. In addition the new AMD Zen chips look promising, and their high end processors will debut on January 17th. In the next 30 days the CPU market will...

I was going to start ordering some if my components so not that long. I was thinking that if Kaby Lake launches in January, then I should just hold off from ordering the CPU.

If I had to make a decision based on the Kaby Lake preview, I personally would wait till January and buy a Z270 motherboard and pair it with a Sky Lake 6700k. When Kaby is released, there will be some deep discounts on the Skylake chips (they are going for $259 in my area). By waiting on the Z270, you will get all of the features of the new chipset and will have access to 3d xpoint / optane.
