My hard drive is quite old and I am trying to copy some files to another folder and the speed drops to 0 bytes/s and then to like 2mb/s and back to 0

I'm wondering would a new hard drive fix this?

Solution
That could be a bad sign of impending failure. I would make a backup and plan to replace the drive asap. What's happening is it's trying to read a sector, failing to read it, retrying, maybe getting it, maybe retrying...

^^ Exactly. It's like taking a 30 year old smoking, rattling Honda Civic and redlining the motor to test it. Now, I wouldn't be averse to getting something that will return your SMART codes and see if you're getting a bunch of reported pending sector reallocations or media write failures. That's a non-stressful method of peeking at it without running the risk of further issues.

Acronis Drive Monitor is free, and will give you the info.
