I have an ASRock H81M-VG4 and I want to buy a new CPU. I had an Intel Celeron Dual-Core G1840 2.8Ghz. What goes better on this motherboard, an i5 4690 or i7 6700?

Solution
The i7 6700 will not work on your motherboard. The 6700 is an LGA 1151 socket, and your motherboard only supports LGA 1150 processors. The i5 4690 would work with your motherboard though and would definitely be a solid upgrade over your current processor.

The best processor for your current board would be the i7 4790.

i7 will be always better but for gaming there's almost no diff between i5 and i7 but if youre not on budget go with i7 (and at least 500W or more PSU should be matter of course)

Out of those two the best processor is the I7 6700, by far.
BUT, the I7 6700 WILL NOT work with that motherboard at all.

The I5 4690 does fit and will work fine. If you want to use an I7 in that board, look at getting an I7 4790, or I7 4770.

I'd choose the 4690 unless you do a lot of video editing, rendering the like. If that's the case then the 4790 would be my choice. Gaming and regyular everyday tasks? 4690 i5.

I've had the 4690K for about a year. Love it with the 970 FTW from EVGA. l haven't purchased BF1 yet but it's on my list.

Pic from yesterday with 78F ambient temp.. https://postimg.cc/image/b9bmhaf3n/ I use the 212 Evo. The 4690 will come with it's own cooler and fan combo. Thermal paste will already be applied. Would I clean that off(Arctic SIlver cleaner set) and apply some fresh Arctic Silver 5? Yes. Would I use the 212 Evo if I were you, even though you aren't OCing? Yes. NECESSARY to install the Evo? no. It does come with a capable heatsink and fan.
