What GPU for 1080p ultra 60fps?

So right now I currently have a GTX 970, and I only play at a resolution of 1080p. I was curious to know if a viable upgrade to maintain 60fps/ultra/1080p for the latest generation of cards. Currently my 970 is paired with a core i5 4690k at stock speeds. Would a 1060 for example be much of an upgrade from my GTX 970? Or would an SLI build see better results at 1080p/

I would advise to get a GTX 1070, You will be more then happy with it. The 1070 is a great upgrade over a 970 where a 1060 is a side step.

I wrong picked the solution, sorry mate.
Would SLI not yield more issues than performance? I have continually been told that SLI 970's will not do much due to the 3.5gb Vram issue. Will I see much of an increase in comparison to the 1060 with an SLI build?

Is the 1070 not completely overkill for 1080p?

I have not seen many games hit 3gb at 1920x1080 so surely the 8gb VRAM is more suited to 1440p/lower end 4k?

1 card is always better then 2. Less issues and games generally work better with it.

That being said 1070 is overkill for 1080p to a small extent. but it leave room for upgrade later down the road. Also games like BF1 on ultra 1080p don't get crazy FPS. Most I see is 80-90 avg that not overkill that smooth gameplay in my book.

First off, GTX1060 cannot SLI. It's a limitation of the underlying design, or so I've been told.

With the current prices of a GTX970, an SLI set up is worth far less than selling your current 970 to supplement the cost of a 1070.

Depending on the games you're trying to play at ultra, it could either be complete overkill (League, DOTA2, CS:GO, etc.) or about right on par with what's needed (BF1, Mafia 3, GTAV with redux mod, overly modded skyrim or fallout 4, etc.). It depends on your current and future game library. Who knows, you might even benefit from cuda acceleration in the future.
