HP OMEN CPU above 80 degrees. Is this normal?

Title says it all. When I play heavy games for a long period of time, the CPU temps go above 80 (maxed at 85 C while playing 7 Days to Die a while ago). Any ideas? Is this normal? I have heard some say that the omen is built to withstand these kinds of temps, however I dont see how these components can safely deal with this.

Specs:

HP Omen
intel core i7
12 GB RAM
1 TB 5400 Hybrid HDD

Solution
Thanks, I looked up your specs before I posted. Keep in mind that i7's run hotter than i5's due to Hyperthreading. The Core temperature on your Laptop is normal and expected. Enjoy!

Sir U Didnt Mentioned About Ur cooling System If Its In Stock Cooling So U MUST U MUST Change It!
Also Didnt Mentioned About Ur Cpu Generations If Its K Series And U OVerclocked It U Should Buy A Good Cooling System To Cool Ur System And Decrease The TEMP
I Didnt Heared Any Thing About Ho Omen So I Think Ur Main Problem Is Ur Cooling System or Bottlenecking Which Doesnt Mean For An i7 processor For Sure
So U Should Afford A Good Cooler Instead Of Stock If It Was
If U already Got A good Cooler So The Problem Is Form Another Thing Which I Cant Now Guess With This Little Info
Best Regards Khd

RedSky_Eagle,

What was your ambient (room) temperature when you were experiencing 85C Core temperatures? All computer temperatures rise and fall with ambient temperature. Normal or "Standard" ambient temperature is 22C or 72F.

Were you running your Laptop on a flat, hard surface with unobstructed airflow to the air intake?

Your HP Omen Laptop runs an i7 6700HQ which Intel specifies a "Throttle" temperature of 100C - http://ark.intel.com/products/88967/Intel-Core-i7-6700HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_50-GHz

The Omen also runs a GTX 965M graphics solution, which contributes to increasing temperatures within your Laptop chassis during gaming. Many later model i7 Laptops run Core temperatures in the mid 80's to low 90's during CPU intensive tasks.

Also, keep in mind that Laptops do not cool as well as desktop PC's, and your i7 6700HQ's desktop counterparts such as the i7 6700 and i7 6700K also have a Throttle temperature of 100C.

Without knowing your ambient temperature and operating conditions, your Core temperatures are relatively normal.

Thank you for the quick reply! That was very informative. As for as the ambient room temperature, I cannot say for certain, but my best estimate is around 68-70 F. My computer sits on my wooden desk, however the bulk of the vents are on the bottom of the computer so idk if that could be an issue also. As soon as I turned off the game and unplugged it, the CPU temps shot down to 38 C within a minute or two.

As I read what you wrote, it would seem your saying ~85 C while gaming is normal. Is this a safe operating temperature for, say, about 3-4 hours a day? Will this cause long term damage? If so, is there anything I can do about it other than not gaming on it?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your help! Also, for anyone else who reads this, turns out it was just 7 days to die. I played arma 3 exile for about 5 hours tonight and my cpu temps maxed at 60 C, and averaged around 54.

I am facing similar problem with my Omen 15, i7-7700HQ, GTX-1050Ti.

The i7-7700HQ (and motherboard) will reach 85C very soon into a DOTA2 game. The system seems to control it well at 85C max for i7 and motherboard.

The GTX-1050Ti is cooler at around 78C max so I don't think GPU is causing the high temperature to the whole system.

I set the Power Option to Battery Saver (from High Performance), i7-770HQ and motherboard will drop down to 70C max.

Hence I think the system is controlling at those temperature intentionally. In a way, things are under control. But my concern is, will 85C over a long period of time will kill my HP Omen prematurely or greatly reduce its lifespan.

Dangerous temps for an i7 are around 95+. You should be fine, even long term.

I have the same laptop and i have to tell you that i had the same problems. On idle, the laptop is cool (about 33-40c) but given the location of cpu, when im gaming, it overheats and i experience thermal throttling ( temps are about 80-93c on cpu, but gpu stays cool on 70c temp range).
I found the solution, all you need is to open the laptop, remove the heatsink and polish the heatsink copper surface with sandpaper and some polish paste on final polishing(also known as heatsink lapping). For thermal paste i used liquid metal (thermal grizzly conductonaut) and i highly recommend it, but given the conductivity of liquid metal paste, you will need to cover the cpu and gpu components around with electric tape (best is 3M scotch 33+, for best performance). Here is video for applying liquid metal... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZWTuRdtbJ4 ...
Video for heatsink lapping ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzPgJjZZLUY ...
After that i managed to achieve temps like 60-70c on CPU and 65-70 on GPU side(overclocked).
Hope it helps
