*the wifi worked perfectly with windows 7 and 10*
You are downgrading, from 10 to 8.1 ?
Anyway, download WiFi drivers from ACER and install them.
If installation fails, try to install them using compatibility settings for windows 7.
Currently old laptops WiFi's are having big problems with windows 8/10 and this wont change.
Hardware is too old/discontinued and the manufacturers aren't delivering drivers...

Hardware is too old/discontinued and the manufacturers aren't delivering drivers for the newer OSes.
If nothing works and you want to use 8.1, you may get a USB WiFi as a cheap and simple solution, which is compatible with newer OSes.

Edit: and check if you have accidentally disabled the adapter.
